Today marks the end of an era. Well, maybe not the end of an era but the end of my mornings with the beautiful and brainy Ann Curry. For the past 16 years Ann Curry has shared her mornings with me and the nation as NBC’s Today Show news anchor and co-host. I recall watching Ann Curry while I dressed for school in the mornings distinctly thinking to myself ” I wonder what lipstick she’s wearing?” Turns out, it’s M.A.C.’s Ruby Woo! Who ever knew I’d be standing next to her in Studio 1A at NBC’s famous Rockefeller Plaza.
In her touching and tearful goodbye, Curry choked with emotion saying, “For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line but man, I did try,” she said. “I will keep trying and I’m so sorry I turned into a sob sister this morning.”
“I am so grateful especially to all of you who watch,” she said. “We often call ourselves a family but you are the real Today show family. I have loved you and I have wanted to give you the world and I still do.”
There are many lessons to learn from Ann Curry, she is smart, confident, courageous and groundbreaking. I am proud of Ann, she left the Today Show this morning with exceptional grace and class.
PS. Friends I have never worked with Ms. Curry and I’d love to, but I have encountered her many times through the hallways and on various sets at NBC and I have to say, she is kind, she always smiles and makes one feel like they matter. Even at 6am!
